PERSPECTIVE
In
the words of educator and author John Erskine, a leader is "one who
knows where he wants to go, and gets up, and goes." Richard M.
Schechter is that kind of leader. Schechter sought his seat on the Houston
Community College Board of Trustees to ensure that educational
opportunities were available to all, regardless of income level.
Schechter
is one of this country's top legal minds, with a deep passion for justice.
For more than two decades, he has represented a wide spectrum of citizens
with his unique expertise in the areas of business litigation, employment
discrimination, personal injury, federal statutory claims and maritime law.
Schechter
is a graduate of Rice University and The University of Texas School of Law,
where he finished in the top 5 percent of his class. He has also been
recognized for his outstanding contributions to the school.
Before
entering private practice, Schechter was a law clerk for the late Judge Sam
Johnson on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. He has written
numerous articles, spoken at national legal seminars and testified before
the U.S. Congress about the impact of impending litigation. Schechter is a
charter member of Texas Monthly's list of Super Lawyers.
For
10 years, he taught law classes at the Thurgood Marshall School of Law. He
has held appointments on committees of the Texas Supreme Court and State
Bar of Texas, and has served as director of the Texas and Houston Trial
Lawyers Association.
He
is very active in both civic and academic affairs and is described by the
Houston Chronicle as a man who has the needed combination of
"expertise and community service." Part of his mission at HCC is
to assist in getting students prepared to compete on a global level.
Mr. Schechter was
elected to the Houston Community College Board in 2005 and his term of
office runs through 2011.
